"What do you call a nurse with a bad back? – Unemployed." Someone who makes an entrance with a dry joke like this is quite unlikely to simply accept his or her fate. Nurse Jackie numbs her hurting back with Vicodin, and amphetamines help against the stress at work. Her drug supplier is a pharmacist who also occasionally gets in bed with the New York woman. While that is not morally impeccable, Jackie's strengths come to the fore in how she handles her patients every day. The successful US series presents the daily goings-on in an emergency room, with lots of black humor, and is, refreshingly enough, not told from the perspective of the demigods in scrubs.
