Slingshots become rocket launchers. "Kings" takes up the story of David and Goliath and carries it over into a fictional present. The Gilboa kingdom is at war with neighboring state Gath. Young soldier David succeeds in destroying one of the enemy's Goliath tanks with a rocket launcher, and in freeing the son of King Silas from captivity. Suddenly all doors at the court are open for the son of a peasant. The lavish NBC production is an intelligent update on biblical motifs, and alludes to current conflicts in the Middle East. "Deadwood" villain Ian McShane brilliantly embodies charismatic king Silas.
