Media Architecture

Cologne Conference Lectures
Friday, October 2th, 08:00 – 13:30 hrs,
in cooperation with CMS Hasche Sigle

At all times, media have required their own architecture. Classic examples for that include libraries, radio stations, or television broadcast centers like the new CCTV headquarters in Beijing. At the same time, media are also an experimental field for devising our future environment. Hence, e.g. fully technically enabled walls as seen in "Mission Impossible" or "The Matrix" eventually reappear on a smaller scale – on the screen of the iPhone. Moreover, media experiences inform conceptions of our world, of how it is and how it should be, giving them new spatial and temporal dynamics that diminish the significance of established philosophical and spatial boundaries. In the Australian Outback, new means of communication facilitate an integration of stray settlements into giant urban spaces. On the other hand, large cities reach beyond their physical appearance and spawn meta-structures of a dual, media and urban, nature, which call for a new thinking. And also interior design is more and more becoming a socio-digital system destined to make all-day-life in a networked society easier and more inspiring. Based on this matrix, the Cologne Conference invites visionaries and experienced hands from the new, ambitious field of Media Architecture to come to Cologne.
