John Rosow was really just supposed to tail a stranger – but the assignment takes him across half the continent, and eventually into his own past. Freshman director Noah Buschel leaves out no film noir implement in the course of that: a booze-loving Sam Spade wannabe, a shady client, dangerous dames, and false friends. And his variation on the theme is entirely in style: elegant colors, floating camera, succinct one-liners. Also, the lead actors prove once again why they are part of Hollywood's A-list. Shannon's snoop in particular, with his incessant hangover and case-hardened understanding of human nature, is impossible to look away from.
