Children are conservative by nature, seeing that they wish for nothing more than as stable an environment as possible. For those who keep changing all the time need something to hold on to. 11-year-old Leah also wishes for things to be normal. The escape from her stepfather has taken her with her mother and two siblings from Leeds to Bradford, where they now live in an almost all-Muslim part of town. Since her alcoholic mother is busy with her own set of problems, Leah turns to her neighbors more and more – and finds support in the Koran. The made-for-television movie was part of the "White Season", the BBC's examination of the condition of the white working class in Great Britain. In the best tradition of British social realism, "White Girl" succeeds as a precise study of the social environment, and is convincing for its exceptional actors, first and foremost young Holly Kenny in the title role.
