John Smith (Colin Farrell) and one hundred English settlers land in Virginia, intent on establishing a beachhead there for the economic penetration of the American continent. While the settlers hope for treasures of gold and abandon all humanity to get them, Smith realizes that the true riches of the New World lie elsewhere: in the close relationship to nature of the native society they encounter. When an Indian princess saves his life, the Briton falls in love with her. Malick's poetic readaptation of the Pocahontas legend is further demonstration of his skill as a great visual stylist.
