As his paramount source of inspiration, the mix of black humor and profoundness in the literary work of Thomas Lynch enabled "Six Feet Under" creator Alan Ball to strike the right note for his series. Lynch is a third generation manager of a funeral home in Michigan and a renowned poet and essayist. The Irish documentary "Learning Gravity" is a portrait of the life and work of the writer in his own words. Lynch speaks as much about his profession and his family as about what the dead can teach the living. These considerations alternate with Lynch reciting from his books, rendering his stories in a wonderful reading voice as director Cathal Black illustrates them in elegiac images. In between fiction and documentary emerges an unusual portrait of a unique poet.
