They have come to symbolize the end of all Hippie dreams: the murders by the Manson Family in August 1969, whose victims included, amongst others, the actress Sharon Tate. Young filmmaker Robert Hendrickson was about to make his first feature film at the time. He did not know then that his lead actor was part of the Family. His connection enabled him to gain exclusive access to the group after the murders. Hendrickson's "Inside the Manson Gang" is the first extensive presentation of the material he shot of the Manson Family as the police arrested them one after the other. Hendrickson complements his images with original music from the Family members and with his own commentary ranging from the sensationalist to the analytical, and creates a new genre in the process: the horror documentary.
