Nothing is as it initially appears in this made-for-television movie by 2006 German Television Award winner Matti Geschonneck. After a long spell abroad, Annabelle returns to Germany to join her brother for a family reunion, where she is shocked to the core about the news she learns. Her father placidly states that he has cancer, and that her mother faces a leg amputation, which is why the two of them have agreed upon ending their own lives. The decision has been made, and an appointment with a Dutch doctor has already been arranged. But the father survives. What begins like a drama on medically assisted suicide gradually reveals itself as a thriller about a family in which any semblance of bourgeois normalcy is demolished.
