Circus life under the big top is something else. With family patriarch Willie Waltz suffering from a brain tumor, one question is looming large: who is going to take over his traditional circus? His three quarreling sons hardly seem fit to him. The only thing the three agree on is that Willie's new wife must not get her hands on the inheritance. "The circus must go on" is Waltz's ultimate request, but the outlook for that to happen is as bleak as the weather in this unsparing Dutch mini-series. Known in the Netherlands chiefly as a Sesame Street actor, Aart Staartjes heads a brilliant ensemble which, in a rare feat for a television series, lends a great dose of realism to this family epic at the fringe of society.
