Nico's last film appearance. She sings "All Tomorrow's Parties", "König" (King) and "Purple Lips" while she wanders about Ballhaus Barmbek. The Ballhaus is a meeting point for lonely hearts, bohemians, mavericks, and total failures in life, located in the midst of the Hamburg borough that bears the same name. Acquaintances are still initiated via table-top telephones here, there are illuminated panels calling for ladies' invitations, and plush seats to sink back into. In her portrayals of the individual fortunes of the protagonists, director Christel Buschmann sketches a picture of a society with increasing isolation that is full of hapless romantics. Nico is joined on screen by an illustrious crowd of Hamburg actresses and actors, musicians, and travesty artists – those who look closely might make out Stefan Aust among the visitors.
