Family loyalty is the theme of many mafia films and series, but in "The Black Donnellys" there is no godfather who demands allegiance. The NBC series revolves around four Irish brothers trying to make do in New York's Hell’s Kitchen. Jimmy, the eldest of them, is the firebrand in the family, Kevin can't stay away from gambling, Sean has a way with women, and Tommy is the responsible one. But the latter’s loyalty to his brothers forces him into a life of crime and violence as well. Paul Haggis and Bobby Moresco, who previously cooperated on "Crash" and "Million Dollar Baby", use a dynamic visual language and startling story twists in their reinterpretation of the mafia genre.
