In their combination of sound and theatrical poses, live concerts achieve a matchless immediacy and atmospheric density. They have long been established as an independent film genre with original aesthetic means, which is in high demand in cinemas and on DVD. The Cologne Conference presents outstanding music film productions and discusses the new popular genre in a workshop talk with creators and experts. Presentaions include:
Gorillaz: Founded in 1998 by Damon Albarn, lead singer of britpop band "Blur", and graphic/ comic-strip artist Jamie Hewlett ("Tank Girl"), this band consists of animated characters. Their concerts look accordingly. Comic characters 2D, Miho Hatori aka Noodle, Russel Hobbs and Murdoc appear on screens or as 3D projections on stage. The actual musicians can only be seen backlit in front of the screen.
Rammstein: The Berlin-based band's concerts are spectacular. With flamethrowers, oversized dildos, exploding drums and even burning musicians (in asbestos coats), Rammstein provide an explosive mixture of hard music and disturbing images. Their Live DVD "Völkerball", released in 2006, documents concerts in different parts of the world.
