In 1980 Ian Curtis hanged himself just prior to the start of the US tour of his band "Joy Division". He only lived to be 23 years old. Photographer Anton Corbijn, widely known for his work with "Depeche Mode" and "U2", has made his debut film a touching memorial to the probably most famous dead person of the New Wave era - needless to say, in black-and-white. However, the film images have little semblance to Corbijn's high-contrast photographs. Instead, he presents Manchester in its true seventies look - in shades of gray. His film is based on the memoirs of Curti's wife Deborah, portrayed by Samantha Morton in the film. Alexandra Maria Lara plays Curti's Belgian girlfriend Annik.
