Filmography Joseph Cedar: Hahesder, 2001; Medurat Hashevet, 2004.
In the midst of enemy territory, Israeli soldiers in the Southern Lebanese fortress of Beaufort sit waiting for the time to come to blow everything up and go back home. But Hezbollah is trying to win a final propaganda victory: though the pullback has long been planned, they keep firing grenades hoping to create the impression of a forced retreat. Director Joseph Cedar, himself a veteran of the First Lebanon War, tells this story based on true events consistently from the perspective of the soldiers. They have to risk their very real lives for a place that has only symbolic meaning. Thus "Beaufort" becomes a striking parable about the senselessness of war.
