Forty years ago, having just emigrated from India to England, physician Yash Pal Suri bought two Super 8 cameras, two projectors and two reel-to-reel recorders. He kept one of these DIY cinema sets and sent the other one off to his old home. A regular exchange of films and audiotapes ensued between England and the former crown colony, where separate parts of the family used the recordings to keep up with the lives of their distant relatives. From these films, interviews with her family members, and excerpts from BBC immigration programs of the 1960s, Yash’s daughter Sandhya Suri has created a moving portrait of her family which tells the story of a successful immigration, but also reflects the perennial longing for the subcontinent.
