Completed shortly before Dutch author and director Theo van Gogh was murdered in late 2004, this mini-series sees its creator once again assume his role as a provocateur at large who spares no one. He transposes Euripides’ gruesome tale of Medea’s infanticide to the contemporary Dutch political scene. Van Gogh’s Jason is an unscrupulous social climber resembling (also murdered) right-wing populist Pim Fortuyn; his Medea is a sacked minister’s daughter who ruthlessly takes revenge on her husband. Filmed with a shaky handheld camera, this mini series takes off into a world where moral standards seem a foreign concept.
