The students don’t dig upholding tradition. So in this year’s Christmas season, the St. Lucia celebrations at school in the small Swedish community of Kroka are supposed to take a different turn. Instead of electing the school’s most beautiful girl to be their St. Lucia as usual, the kids – a young, but seasoned audience of casting shows – prefer to vote the least popular girls out at first, and award the winner a shopping gift certificate – because who, after all, would care for the mere honor of being the school’s St. Lucia? On top of all this, the school inspector has announced his visit for the festivities. What shines more than anything in this two-part movie are the frosty aesthetics pervading it down to the smallest detail and the film’s immaculately composed images, which serve to convey and dissect the absurd events at this rural school.
