Some women in the Turkish-Syrian border region have tattoos. The motives are based on old Egyptian signs whose meanings are unclear today. The women tell the stories of their tattoos. They talk about the needle punctures, the delight and the pain associated with them. The tattoos are as much testament to the women’s vanity as they are traces of claims to ownership of female bodies by men.
