And yet he speaks. Interview-shy Bob Dylan went before the camera for ten hours of conversation for Martin Scorsese’s “No Direction Home”, amazingly willing to disclose his thoughts, and, at times, even displaying good humor. And he doesn’t stop there: for “No Direction Home”, Dylan also opened up his private archive of hundreds of photos, original manuscripts and rare concert recordings. The 205 minute documentary almost exclusively focuses on the time period from Dylan’s arrival in New York in January, 1961, to his motorcycle accident in 1966, an event that marked a fundamental break in his oeuvre. In his film, Scorsese stays away from simple hero worship. Instead, interviews with Joan Baez and other companions render a complex depiction of an artist who wanted to be nothing less than the voice of his generation.
