In this last part of his “Trilogie der emotionalen Vereisung” (“trilogy of an icing up of emotions”), Haneke provides another close examination of the theme of violence. A number of people who are strangers to each other meet at one place on one day. They witness and experience how they themselves as well as the others are exposed to violence in various ways. In the process, they realize that the roles of perpetrator and victim seem to be interchangeable. Like no other Haneke film, “71 Fragmente einer Chronologie des Zufalls” (“71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance”) forces its audience to confront and reflect upon violence and its manifestations.
