Bricklayer Peter first tries to buy his parents’ love, then his wife’s. He has to work ever longer hours to pay his installments on time and to erase his debts. His guilty conscience makes him buy more and more presents for his wife. A vicious circle with no way out save a violent one. Not unlike "Angst vor der Angst", "Ich will doch nur, dass ihr mich liebt" is something of a case study, but about more than the impossibility of buying love. "Ich will doch nur, dass ihr mich liebt" also reveals how the conflicting demands of a consumer society and traditional gender roles can tear apart a human being.
