In "Acht Stunden sind kein Tag", more than in any other of his works, Fassbinder may stray farthest from the cliché of the difficult, gloomy film auteur. In this WDR TV series he merges the milieu and themes of the worker film with the bourgeois genre of the family series. It revolves around the lives, loves, and woes of three generations of a Cologne working-class family. While there are many problems within the family and in the workplace, Fassbinder always seeks and finds solutions to them, and also allows for humorous interludes to soften the didactic edge of the explicitly political objectives of the series.
