In German media, teenage and young adult immigrants are overwhelmingly typified as problem cases, threats to public safety or everyone’s laughing stock. Bettina Braun is opting for a realistic and differentiated view instead.
She finds tragical, but also comical and hopeful aspects in the everyday lives of a group of 16- to 20-year-old Cologne Muslims of Albanian, Moroccan, Tunisian or Turkish descent. They are trying to navigate their way between the values cherished by their families and the challenges of the modern job market and the liberal society they live in. The filmmaker’s pregnancy helps her win the trust of the group – and encounter the caring side of these junior machos.
