Erotic art or pornographic kitsch? Japanese photographer Araki is notorious for his bondage images of naked women, both at home and in the West. But there are many more facets to this artist’s extensive oeuvre, spread over innumerable magazines and more than 350 books. For his debut film, American director Travis Klose follows the vibrant 63-year-old at work for amateur porn publications, art magazines and museums, and talks to Araki’s models and admirers. Casting aside his public image as a sex-obsessed buffoon, the artist emerges as a somewhat introverted person, whose life was overshadowed by the early death of his beloved wife.
