Almost 18-year-old Malte yearns to leave the resort town on the island of Usedom. He lives there with his father, an alcoholic who has lost all his bearings in the upheaval of the East German revolution and in the aftermath of his wife’s death. Malte works in a chippy and smuggles Polish cigarettes to afford him his driver’s license exam and a swift departure. When his sister Hannah shows up for the first time in years, presenting her little son Lukas and demanding Malte’s support on the grounds of their family ties, he leaves angrily and moves in with his buddy Pawel. But when he falls in love with Annika, a young girl who is there on vacation, and eventually assumes responsibility for Lukas, he learns to accept his family as it is.
