89 millimeters – that’s the gauge difference between railroad tracks in
Western Europe and those in Belarus. No major deviation, but what begins
here at the new EU’s border is a new world, presumably "Europe’s last dictatorial regime". Without the backing of a TV network or film fund financing, the filmmaker, who studies directing at the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg, seeks out Belarus’ young, post-soviet generation on several trips to the country. He meets a resistance activist, a façade painter, a journalist, and a soldier loyal to the state, registering how they view and experience dictatorial rule in their everyday lives.
