In his feature film debut, director George Lucas further explored themes he had developed during his film school studies. An Orwellian dystopia set in aseptic labyrinths where just a few people are caught up in a fight for their own individuality. Although the film was a financial flop for Lucas and his producer Francis Ford Coppola, it is still given much attention by a hard-core group of fans (who have advanced the search for references to the film in Lucas’ later works to the status of popular sport). Schifrin’s music for "THX 1138", however, is the opposite of his well-loved jazz compositions: A disturbing sound experiment that perfectly compliments this coolly devised nightmare.
