With "Bullitt", Steve McQueen attained the status of coolness personified, owing to a large extent to Lalo Schifrin’s relaxed and sparingly applied lounge jazz. The 10 minute chase scene, the green Ford Mustang, the figure of the cop with a brutal exterior and a soft core, and Schifrin’s "Bullitt" score became a blueprint for the wave of ‘cop movies’ that followed. But the rash of genre progeny broke their milk teeth gnawing on Schifrin’s achievement: A musical portrait of Steve McQueen and Bullitt’s city, San Francisco, painted with a mixture of aggression, melancholy and rebelliousness and immortalized on the soundtrack.
