After 30 years Ingmar Bergman returns to the characters from "Scenes from a marriage". Marianne (Liv Ullmann) visits her ex-husband Johann (Erland Josephson), who retired to the countryside at the age of 86. In the seemingly idyllic countryside 32 years after their divorce, she encounters a power struggle between Johann and his son Henrik concerning Henrik’s daughter, a talented cellist. Bergman developed this epilog into a work with highly subtle drama of considerable power from a quiet studio play.
