Although forbidden by Kenyan law, thousands of girls and young women there are still regularly subjected to FGM - female genital mutilation. Kim Longinotto (“Divorce Iranian Style”, “Runaway”) delivers an intelligent and moving analysis of the cultural context of this tradition. While her standpoint is decidedly against the practice, Loginotto explores the dilemma of the women who regard so-called ‘circumcision’ as part of their cultural identity. The film is uncompromising when it comes to the practice itself: The scene of a girl undergoing the procedure borders on the unbearable, but effectively communicates the scope of the brutality.
