Bob and his friends, shaggy heads full of nonsense, a life spent smoking the wrong plant and making merry music in a cloud of intoxication. These clichés were ripe for revision, and the BBC rises to the occasion with great expertise. Excellent archive material, prominent interviewees and a lovingly compiled soundtrack make the ecstatic global reception of the street sound of a Caribbean island plausible even to uninitiated sun-starved Central Europeans. In addition to historical insights, sufficient attention is paid to raggae’s various contemporary lines of development. And Bob Marley is there too.
