May 1974: Willy Brandt resigns as German Chancellor two weeks after his speaker Günter Guillaume is outed as an East German spy. In just 14 days, an historical drama featuring power and betrayal, corruptibility as well as high principles is played out. With an excellent acting ensemble featuring Michael Mendl, director Oliver Storz convincingly reawakens the Zeitgeist. Relying completely on the aura of his performers, he portrays, with chamber theatre-like intensity, the end of an era as reflected in the mirror of personal tragedy. With “Im Schatten der Macht”, Storz succeeds in moving beyond the realm of a history lesson to create a moving human and political parable.
