On September 11, 1973, Salvador Allende, the democratically elected president of the Republic of Chile, was deprived of power and murdered by the military. With his death Allende’s dream of ‘Democratic Socialism’ came to an end. What followed was the terror regime of his former confidante Augusto Pinochet. As part of the highly acclaimed ARD series "Politische Morde” (Political Murders), Wilfried Huismann mixes a compelling biography of the declared philanthropist Allende with a political thriller from the hot phase of the Cold War. In addition to world politics, he manages, with the participation of Allende’s bodyguard Pablo Zepeda, who talks for the first time about the final hours in the presidential palace, to convincingly convey the personal drama of the betrayed idealist Salvador Allende.
