It is the era of the Great Depression in the USA at the beginning of the 1930s. Grace (Nicole Kidman), hunted by gangsters, flees to Dogville, a sleepy town in the Rocky Mountains where the road ends and the moral rearming of the Puritans bears strange fruit. The townspeople absorb her, let her work for them, and finally exploit her desperate situation in barbaric ways, until the fragile young woman transforms into a vengeful goddess. Inspired by Brecht’s "Seeräuber Jenny," Lars von Trier presents a vigorous handheld camera epos in a chalk-marked town. At the Cannes festival, it was lavished with praise and was favourite to many film critics but spurned by the jury.
