Wolfgang Menge wrote the script for "Der Mann im Schatten” based on an authentic case which, known as the "bathtub murder,” caused a furor in 1940s Vienna. A woman industrialist is murdered, and both her lover and a mysterious businessman are suspects. Menge’s reserved yet suspenseful style, coupled with Viennese Charm, yields an ambiguous mélange: on the surface harmless and pleasant, but underneath precise and revealing. In this film, the cabaret artist Helmut Qualtinger played the grumpy Viennese senior police officer Dr. Radosch; with "Der Mann im Schatten,” Herbert Fux began a film career as a villain on duty.
