In 1994, French director Emmanuel Finkiel placed and ad: “Yiddish-speaking men and women needed for movie between the ages of 65 and 90.” The casting tapings made for an equally comedic and touching film, and are a testament to the spirit and humor of its protagonist, as well as the dying culture and language of European Jews. Particularly moving are moments in which the lay actor confuses the script with memories, and so relives long-forgotten events. The scenes leave a deep impression due to their imperfection and the uninhibited eye of the camera.
