In 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton (Kenneth Branagh) sets off to sea on the ship Endurance in order to be the first man to cross Antarctica. Yet as World War I breaks out in Europe, the expedition is faced with a seemingly hopeless situation. Historical specialist Charles Sturridge („Longitude“) unfolds the epic tale of heroism before a breathtaking polar backdrop (scenes were filmed under arctic conditions in Greenland and Iceland). Although the adventure’s outcome is generally known, suspense is maintained until the last second, and shows the 28 Britons with a fair dose of irony and dry humor.
