Why format protection?

Worldwide trade in television formats is booming.
Increasingly more shows rely on the adaptation of previously tested concepts.  However uncertainty remains about the question of rights:  “A cheap copy is better than an expensive license” is one option usually difficult to fight by legal means.  What do existing laws say about the protection of television formats?  What have judges decided in disputes that have made it to court?

What alternative solutions can FRAPA (Format Recognition and Protection Association) offer?

Answers to these questions will be provided by a panel made up of leading national and international representatives of television industry and lawyers, in cooperation with the Adolf Grimme Akademie, GRUNDY Light Entertainment, and Norten Rose Vieregge.
