By the year 2045 some 12,000 people living in the brown coal region on the Rhine will have been resettled due to opencast mining (Garzweiler II). “Otzenrather Sprung” follows the residents of three villages as they prepare against their will to make a new beginning. In the process, it reveals the countenance of a society compelled to be economically efficient. The film, shot in calm and captivating black and white pictures, refrains from denouncing “provincialism” and was awarded the Grimme Prize.
