In the 1940s the American artist Maya Deren was the icon of international avant-garde film. But as a relentless activist in experimental film, her aesthetics influence extended far beyond this avant-garde scene, all the way to films of David Lynch. The movement artist, who was obsessed with rhythm, also did pioneering work in her investigation of the Haitian voodoo cult (book: "The Divine Horseman"). This journey through the life and work of Maya Deren weaves statements by former comrades-in-arms with compelling pictorial material from this exceptional artist, who constantly took herself to the limit and died at the young age of 44 in New York.
