Television discovered pop with "The Avengers”. Beyond the backdrop of completely absurd plots (killer robots, invisibles, Venusians), the series – from the dialogue down the costumes (Pierre Cardin, John Bates) revolved around only one thing: style. John Steed (Patrick Macnee), the gentleman with the bowler, and Emma Peel (Diana Rigg), the exceptionally well-read karate lady in a skin-tight catsuit, were already cool back when the word only referred to the temperature. The series not only became a milestone in television entertainment, it also influenced fashion for generations, and was the beginning of emancipation in television. While no expense was spared for the big-screen remake with Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman, it never reached the casual charm of the original.
