For a period of 12 months Clive Gordon followed every step of Snooky the pimp with a camera. Ennobled as a media star by Jerry Springer, the “International Pimp of the Year” drives through his territory in a Mercedes convertible like the main character in a gangster film, makes new acquisitions (“gonna find me a new bitch today“), and exudes charm. But gradually the façade starts to crumble and the focus turns to the incredible psychological pressure and humiliation that the pimp subjects his women to, before resorting to physical violence. Although dubbed a “fly-on-the-wall” documentary, Gordon’s direction, from the music to the camera, is stylistically sound and soothingly rhythmic.
