Via the Interrotron, a device enabling direct contact between interviewer, respondent, and camera, Errol Morris ("The Thin Blue Line," "A Short History Of Time") portrays in a ten-part series people whose stories cannot be captured credibly in words. The interviews with octopus-obsessed marine biologists, autistic slaughterhouse designers, and publicity-seeking psychologists, which include surreal insertions, are extremely compelling. The work of Errol Morris, who is considered a major innovator of the genre, is the subject of this year’s Werkschau, which focuses on important directors.
