This four-part series consists of four events which occurred during the time of separated Germany: the 17th of June, 1953, the building of the Berlin Wall in 1961, the 30th anniversary of the German Democratic Republic and finally, the fall of the wall in 1989. However, world history is not the main focus of this production, rather everyday life of the “simple people“ from Liebesau, a fictitious village near the city of Halle. Futile love, vile betrayal, idealists and civil spies. Taking place far away from big politics, the series portrays the people and shows how they dealt with daily life, or in some cases, did not.
Peter Steinbach wrote the scripts for this project with a great deal of empathy and filled the roles with an excellent cast, including Katharina Thalbach, Anna Thalbach and Jörg Schüttauf. The author has written various other scripts for successful German productions, such as „Heimat“, „Herbstmilch“, „Klemperer – Ein Leben in Deutschland“ or „Jahrestage“.
