Formats from two TV genres have taken the worldwide television market by storm: game-shows and reality-TV shows. These formats have been much more successful than previous trends. The same goes for the speed with which they were disseminated around the world; but also, in some cases, the speed with which they lost favor again.
The basic idea of the two genres is not new. What role will formats play in future program formation? Can trends be planned? Does a trend become a format or a format a trend? How do formats emerge? How are they developed further? What makes them successful?
