After numerous successful espionage series, it was only a matter of time until their parodies appeared. Spying for the US Newscaster C.O.N.T.R.O.L., Maxwell Smart started fighting against the world-wide terrorist gang KAOS in 1965. Mel Brooks, who specialized himself in genre parodies, such as "Balzing Saddles", "Spaceballs" and other classics, equipped his agent with shoe telephones and even hidden armpit guns, since things did not always work out if he relied solely on his common sense ("Sorry about that, Chef"). Despite of Maxwell's few loose screws, the world could be saved from its final destination thanks to the hardworking female agent 99. In 1965, Get Smart was the second most succesful series after Bonanza in the USA, surely thanks to guest stars, as well, such as Johnny Carson, Leonard Nimoy, Vincent Price and Bob Hope.
