Richard, at the age of 22, has inherited his father‘s undertaker’s business in Bradford, England. He has his life turned upside down during a burial when he meets Barbara, a beautiful young actress from Los Angeles. In hot pursuit of Barbara and a new life, Richard takes on the City of Angels. Mika Kaurismäki’s film, based on the best-seller of the same name by co-writer Richard Rayner, is the light-hearted and witty confrontation of two Europeans with Hollywood. The movie had its premiere at the film festival in Toronto. Mika Kaurismäki has succeeded in integrating “a few Finnish elements” into the film, such as the Leningrad Cowboys. Standing out among the excellent cast with a special guest appearance is Johnny Depp as Dead Man.
