Jack is a writer living in London. For the time being he can’t think of the right idea for a book and financially he is not very well off either. Although he has resolved not to, he takes on a job as croupier in a casino which his father has arranged for him. Jack begins to write about “Jake” the croupier. “I was fascinated by the role of the croupier. At first it seems like a romantic job, but in reality it’s a very strange profession. The casino becomes a metaphor for life, and Jack is like a scientist closely examining human behaviour.” (Mike Hodges)
