A gambler and philanderer, Danny is locked out of the family home when he looses all his dole money on a horse race. He decides to make a fresh start by escaping the bleakness of Liverpool to the unspoilt beauty of the Lake District. He has no idea that his journey will take him to a world far beyond the romantic lakeside idyll. "The Lakes" is Jimmy McGovern ("Cracker") at his best; bearing strong autobiographical marks and dealing with his familiar obsessions: lust, deceit, gambling, death, Catholicism and revenge. A Brit Pop rites-of-passage story, an optimistic, life-affirming comment on current British politics, featuring an impressive performance by Johm Simm as the 90's "Alfie" anti-hero Danny.
